Eucalyptus is a diverse genus of flowering trees in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. There are more than 700 species of Eucalyptus, mostly native to Australia, and a very small number found in adjacent parts of New Guinea and Indonesia. Eucalyptus is one of the tallest trees in the world and it can attain heights up to 100 meters. Only 15 species occur outside Australia. Species of Eucalyptus are cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics including the Americas, England, Africa, the Mediterranean Basin, the Middle East, China and the Indian Subcontinent. Eucalyptus is a tree that grows up to 70-100 m in height, with a straight, grey trunk, smooth-barked, except for the rough basal. The leaves are 9-14 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm broad, with a long acuminate apex and a smooth margin.
